The Homeboy Open
Story
The Homeboy Open started in 2010 with 3 guys who really wanted the gift of a round of golf on Father's day - but knew better than to ask. (No one wants to take away from the family on Father's Day.) So a better alternative was to play the day before. The first 3 years were just a single foursome; however, not long after year 3, the vision began to take shape. Not only a "gift of golf" before Father's day, but an event that would bring black men out for comradery, networking and fun. The vision has always been to have black men come together and share life, let our guard down and have fun.
2017 marked another milestone for the Homeboy Open. That year we offered sponsorship opportunities to businesses, with the goal of highlighting black-owned businesses. 2017 was the 2nd consecutive year of 60+ golfers - of all skill levels. The day went without a hitch. In 2019, we set our sights on 80+ participants, shotgun start - scramble style tournament, and returning to our roots of having fun and sharing life. Our goal for 2025 is to get 90 golfers. The event committee has a vision for this event really taking off and allowing for some real growth in numbers and support. However, as we grow we want to be purposeful and mindful of our initial vision - to keep the day fun and recognize the next day is Father's Day - family day.
